The launch of an inclusive national dialogue following the 2024 elections marked an important step towards strengthening national cohesion, democratic participation and political consensus in Mozambique.

The outgoing chairperson of the Southern African Development Community Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation and the Malawian vice president, Enock Chihana, made this observation during the just-ended SADC Organ Troika Summit in Durban.

Chihana said the region is encouraged by the continued progress in addressing the security situation in Cabo Delgado Province through a combination of security measures, development initiatives and regional cooperation.

"On the situation in the Republic of Mozambique, it is pleasing to note that the government and the opposition sides are engaged in a national dialogue aimed at addressing political challenges and the violence which erupted after the last elections. It is encouraging to note that the country's Armed Forces, with support from other partners, are engaged in combat operations aimed at rooting out terrorist cells in some districts of Cabo Delgado Province."

It has been almost a decade of war in Mozambique without end in sight that the southern African country is fighting insurgency in the far northern Province of Cabo Delgado linked to the Islamic state group.
The conflict has seen attacks on civilians and security forces and displaced thousands of people.
