Keetmanshoop Municipality workers want the Strategic Executive of Finance at the Municipality, Desiree Boois, to be removed from the position, accusing her of fund mismanagement and victimisation.

Boois was recently reinstated in her position following her suspension on 24 June.

The suspension follows a protest by municipal workers, demanding Boois' removal over allegations of misuse of municipal funds, poor financial management, poor governance, intimidation, victimisation, and bullying, amongst others.

The Namibia Public Workers Union (NAPWU), representing the workers, last week met with the ||Kharas Governor to express their discontent over the reinstatement of Boois.

The union's regional coordinator for the Southern Regions, Astrid Sauerwein, indicated Boois was reinstated because suspension procedures were not followed.

"The situation is really dire, and the workers have reached that point where they are just fed up to the extent that they just want to go into an industrial action which we, the union, do not want because we all know when it comes to strikes, we don't want that, and that is really our very last resort."

Sauerwein further expressed that the union tried to negotiate with the municipality, but nothing came of it.

||Kharas governor Dawid Gertze called for professionalism in handling the case.

"We need to come together and discuss, but there is a notion that whenever people raise issues, they are being victimised, which is not right because in any institution the harmony and the tranquillity of that institution determine the success and the effectiveness of that institution, and that is one thing we are lacking."

The workers also had a close-door engagement with the Minister of Urban and Rural Development James Sankwasa.

Attempts to get comments from Boois proved futile.
