Prime Minister, Elijah Ngurare has raised concerns over the alleged misuse of funds allocated to the Public Service Employees Medical Aid Scheme, claiming that an organised network may be involved.

He expressed concern over how N$4 billion could be spent before the end of the financial year, describing the expenditure as unacceptable.

Dr Ngurare was responding to LPM MP Eneas Emvula, who raised concerns over shortages of chronic medication at public health facilities, saying patients are forced to move between pharmacies to obtain life-saving medicines.

"We have public health facilities that are experiencing shortages of medication for hypertension and type 1 diabetes. Consequently, both elderly individuals and young people are compelled to visit multiple pharmacies, a practice often referred to as 'pharmacy hopping', to obtain the life-saving medications they require," said Emvula.

Dr Ngurare said the government was compiling recommendations following concerns raised about challenges facing the medical aid scheme, adding that authorities were investigating the alleged misuse of funds.

"A cartel, for lack of a better term, appears to be misappropriating funds allocated to PSEMAS."
The Premier added that the government is committed to addressing the challenges to ensure public servants retain access to quality healthcare.
