Namibians have paid tribute to the late former First Lady Penehupifo Pohamba, highlighting her contribution to women's empowerment and the liberation struggle.

The Swapo Party Women's Council (SPWC) Secretary Fransina Kahungu says the death of the former fist lady has left a void among Namibian women.

"It is a painful reality. Her passing leaves a void in her family, in our movement, among Namibian women, and in the nation she served with distinction. We'll be remembered for her grace, her dignity, her humility, and the honourable life she lived."

Pohamba - a nurse by profession - remained committed to healthcare, particularly maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS awareness, and the welfare of vulnerable communities.

The Chief Executive Officer of Lady Pohamba Private Hospital, Baronice Hans, reflected on her dedication to the health sector and her continued service while serving as First Lady.

"That achievement gives even deeper meaning to her name, and Madam Pohamba believed in the dignity and the potential of the Namibian people. Our hospital is a living expression of that belief, and we have a responsibility to keep raising the standard of care for generations to come."

A beneficiary for the Organisation for the Empowerment of Widows/Widowers and Orphans of HIV and AIDS (OEWENA), Levin Geingos reflected on the impact of the late founder's work and the opportunities it created for women.

"We will remember her warm smile. We will remember her elegant presence. We will remember how she made every person feel seen and valued, from the highest office to the smallest village. 'On behalf of all of us, thank you, Mama,' is what I want to say."

The memorial activities began with a prayer service on Monday, followed by tributes from political representatives to the healthcare fraternity.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Vice President Lucia Witbooi, Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare and senior government officials also visited the Pohamba residence, where they signed the book of condolences.

As the memorial activities conclude on Thursday, tributes continue to reflect on Pohamba's legacy.

The official memorial will be held on Saturday, the 24 October before departure to Okanghudi in the Ohangwena Region, where similar memorial services will be held until the burial on the 30th of October.
