Two cases of suicide have been reported by the Namibian Police in one day.

Richard Namwandi, son of former Education Minister David Namwandi, is reported to have committed suicide at a guest house in Ongwediva on Monday.

The 30-year-old man, who was a musician, booked a room at a guest house and hanged himself with a rope on a steel iron in the room.

His next of kin have been informed.

The Swakopmund police have also confirmed a suicide on Monday.

A 28-year-old man was found hanging in his bathroom after an alleged altercation with his girlfriend.

The deceased was identified as Festus Lucas, and his next of kin have also been informed.

The world commemorated World Suicide Day last month, and next Monday is World Mental Health Day.

The rise in suicide cases comes as long-time musician and preacher Naftalie Amukwelele, owner of D-Naff Entertainment and the First Lady’s BeFree Movement, together with LifeLine ChildLine, are planning to host a mental health awareness music show this Saturday.

Amukwelele says that many young people suffer in silence and is hoping to create an opportunity where those who suffer silently from mental health problems can speak out and seek help.
