The National Assembly has managed to complete all items on its agenda on today's order paper, despite the absence of all opposition party members in the house.

Following their unceremonious exit from the house the previous two days, all opposition party members did not appear in the legislative chambers.

On Wednesday, they walked out of the chamber for what they termed insults hurled at them by Works and Transport Deputy Minister, Veikko Nekundi, and on Thursday, they again walked out in protest for what they described as Speaker Peter Katjavivi's bias towards opposition parties.
 
Today, the house considered and finished 13 motions and two notices of motion.

The motions include the second reading of the Appropriation Amendment Bill, the Estate Amendment, Repeal of Obsolete Law, the Georgetown Agreement, Stamp Duty, Income Tax, and the Value Added Tax Amendment bills.

The others are motions on the effectiveness and adequacy of drug and alcohol laws and a motion requesting that the Directorate of Youth, the National Youth Council, and the National Youth Service be combined into one unit, among others.

Two motions stood over, awaiting responses from the opposition members.

Prof. Katjavivi expressed satisfaction with the speed at which the house dealt with the items on the agenda.
