More investment from the private sector is needed to change the negative behavior of road users and achieve zero road accidents.

This is the view of Jones Lutombi, Manager for Accident and Injury Prevention at the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund.

The Navachab Gold Mine, in collaboration with the MVA Fund, launched a road safety campaign at Karibib.

The mine donated some reflective jackets to MVA officials to boost their road safety efforts.

Lutombi says it is important for the officers to be visible on the road because drivers get discouraged from taking risks.

He called on the public and private sectors to support road safety in Namibia.

"For us to change the behavior of road users, we require resources: we require vehicles, we require equipment, we require reflective jackets, we require so many resources. We would like to see no one seriously injured or killed on our roads, and we can only do so if we continue to educate our public, our road users, and work with traffic law enforcement to enforce the laws."

The Manager of Security and Emergency Services at the Navachab Gold Mine urged all road users to make positive decisions during the festive season.

"Everybody passes through this specific section of the road toward the coastline and from the coast back to the inland. As professionals, we are exposed to these types of events on a daily basis, and what we need to do determines if a person's life might be saved or not. Our request as a company, Navachab Gold Mine, and as Namibian citizens is that we stop this negligent behavior that we have on the road. We should actually stop drinking and wanting to drive; we should stop speeding, for instance; these are all contributing factors towards accidents."

In order to save lives, the stakeholders highlighted the need for the public to report accidents as quickly as possible through the MVA toll-free number at 9682.

Emergency response services are stationed near Karibib and Arandis to quickly respond to road accidents in the region.
