President Hage Geingob says the government is investigating the misuse of the Public Service Medical Aid Scheme, PSEMAS by members and in some cases, their dependents.

Dr. Geingob said this during a courtesy visit by a team of medical professionals under the UK-based Adam Global Healthcare program, at State House on Monday.

President Geingob told the delegation that the country’s medical coverage is quite good, however, abuse has been taking place costing the government millions of dollars.

The Ministry of Health and Social Services says reforms are also ongoing, including ways to reduce the N$3 billion allocation to PSEMAS.

Executive Director, Ben Nangombe told nbc News that the verification of claims has also not been efficient, as some doctors would even claim for a medical treatment they haven’t performed.

Through PSEMAS, Government is said to be losing N$900 million annually through dubious claims and scams according to International Monetary Fund’s findings in 2018.
