A decade of power struggles in the Ohakafiya District of the Oukwanyama Traditional Authority has finally ended, following the installation of a new headman, Nghifikepunye Ndemudina, on Monday.
The community and the traditional authority had been at loggerheads since 2013.
The battle also had its moment in the High Court, as the matter could not be resolved in traditional courts.
The dispute resulted in the division of the Ohakafiya District into two, namely Ohakafiya itself and Oshikunde.
Ten years later, and following the intervention of the Oukwanyama Traditional Authority's Ohamba Martha Nelumbu at the request of the Ohakafiya Committee, the storm has now settled.
Nghifikepunye Ndemudina has now been installed as senior headman at a ceremony along with twelve other headmen.
"I want to tell you that I have installed Ndemudina to lead you in this district; the certificate I am handing over to him from the Oukwanyama Traditional Authority signifies that he is officially appointed, and please give him your full cooperation," said Martha Nelumbu, the Ohamba of the Oukwanyama Traditional Authority."
Homba Nelumbu has called on the community of Ohakafiya to maintain peace and avoid conflict, which will only derail development.
Ndemudina pledged to unite the community.
"I feel honored to be entrusted with this huge responsibility, and I promised to serve you with honesty and dedication. I will continue where my predecessor has left off to better and develop this community."
He says the living standard of the Ohakafiya community can only improve if people are united and cooperate with their leaders.
