The Livestock Producers Organization has expressed dismay at media reports accusing "white commercial farmers" of wanting to see the demise of MeatCo.

The organization has called for an urgent investigation into these allegations.

The Livestock Producers Organisation is an affiliate member of the Namibia Agricultural Union, which is considered the country's white-dominated farmers union.

A report published in a local English daily last week claimed that farmers associated with the NAU delivered a letter to the Ghanaian authority that claims meat they import from Namibia's Northern Communal Areas is not fit for human consumption and is infected with foot-and-mouth disease.

LPO Chairperson Thinus Pretorius, in a statement issued, expressed shock at the allegations and called for an urgent investigation into the matter.

Pretorius stressed that his organization has always strived to establish a culture of good cooperation and dialogue between its members and other players in the agriculture sector.

He highlighted the LPO's contribution to Namibia's meat value chain until it started gaining support from local and international markets.

He thus described the allegations that "white farmers" want to see the demise of MeatCo as malicious and absurd.

Such claims, he said, are aimed at causing division among farmers along racial lines.

He further maintained that LPO remains committed to rendering its support to the government and protecting and promoting the Namibian meat brand.
