Athletics Namibia hosts Senior National championships

Windhoek-Athletics Namibia hosted the Senior National Track and Field Championships in Windhoek this weekend over two days. Windhoek's Independence Stadium played host to the two-day championship, where athletes competed in track and field events to be crowned national champions. The event, which started on Friday, concluded on Saturday, with the 100 and 400 metre disciplines being the highlight. In the 100 metre final sprint Khomas' Even Tjiviju beat the chasing pack to win in a time of 10.54 seconds. In second position was Sandro Diergaardt for his silver in 10.77 seconds, while Sydney Kamaruuma took bronze in a time of 10.38 seconds. Most of the country's 14 regions made it to the nationals championship, with Khomas dominating in most events. Another event that also lived up to expectations was the 400meter men's final with season campaigner Ernst /Narib helping himself to a gold medal in a time of 46.5 seconds, followed by Ivan Geldenhuys in second in 46.95 seconds. It was bronze for Mahmad Bock in a time of 47.19 seconds. In the women's final, Erongo stormed to victory with Perpetua Simaata claiming gold in 58.93 seconds and team mate Ane Rautenbach running a time of 59.51 seconds for second spot. The men's long jump was another eye catching event with competition mostly provided by Khomas and Erongo. In the end, however, it was Khomas' Sandro Diergaardt who leapt to gold with a distance of 7.56 metres to leave Emmanuel Samantu in second position with a jump of 7.27 meters. After two days of fierce competition the president of Athletics Namibia Erwin Naimhwaka admitted that even though some regions could not make it, the event was successful. "I'm happy with the level of competition although not completely satisfied in terms of the standard, but I think it was a very good competition. The athletes have turned up and that's very good. All the regions have send their best. I think in terms of track and field the competitions are still few and from Athletics Namibia I think we have tried our best. We need the regions to come on board and create capacity to supplement the competitions that Athletics Namibia is organising" Naimhwaka said. Athletics Namibia will send a U17/20 team to compete at the Southern Africa Championship in Johannesburg, South Africa next weekend.
