Gold Coast-Marathon runner Helalia Johannes made history when she became the first woman from Namibia to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. Johannes was in a class of her own as she dominated the race, in which predictions before the competition gave her no chance at all. The running queen of Namibia put up a powerful performance that left everyone taking when she won the race in a time of 2 hours 32 minutes and 40 seconds. Another Namibian runner and Johannes' training partner, Lavinia Haitope, ended 6th in the same race. Australia took silver and bronze medals as their hope for gold was shattered by Johannes. This was Johannes' biggest victory on the international scene and it will go a long way. The gold medal by Johannes was the second for Namibia at the Games after boxer Jonas Junias Jonas scooped the first gold for the country yesterday. The two gold medals collectors put Namibia's name on the map and their achievement is seen as encouragement for other Namibian sports men and women going to future international events. Both Jonas and Johannes' feats are expected to alert Government and the private sector to start investing in sport and makes sport a priority once again. Namibia will return home with the two gold medals soon as the 2018 edition of the Games will end with a colorful closing ceremony today at midnight.
