Namibia Chess federation team off to Georgia

Windhoek-The Namibia Chess Federation's senior male and female teams received national colours at the Namibia Sports Commission in Windhoek earlier today, ahead of the upcoming Chess Olympiad, which will take place from the 23rd of September to the 1st of October at the 89th FIDE Congress in Batumi, Georgia. In celebration of Georgia's 100th independence anniversary, the Georgian Chess Federation and the Chess Olympiad's organizing committee invited world chess federation member countries from all over the world to this chess tournament. Speaking at the sports commission today, Namibia Chess Champion and head of the delegation, Charles Eichab, shed more light on the upcoming trip. ”Our goal is basically to improve on our world ranking. If we can break the top hundred, that will be wonderful and also to get some few upsets at one Olympiad. In the last competition, we drew with New Zealand, which is a top 50 ranked country in the world. If we could get another draw, that will be good to our team“ Eichab said. NBC Sport also spoke to the Namibia Chess Federation President, Israel Shikongo, who said that chess has no age limit, or required background as it is all about knowing the basics. “Today was such a great day - to be sent off officially by the Namibia Sports Commission is wonderful. We will just be good ambassadors when we represent the country in Georgia” Shikongo explained. Magdalena Valombola, who started playing chess at the age of 13, explained that she's looking forward to the tournament to learn new tricks and skills from opponents from other countries. “I'm extremely excited, because when we come back, it's always that chess experience. Playing against stronger players, the culture of the people, the country and everything” Volombola said. A team of 12 members, including officials, is expected to leave the country this weekend to travel to Georgia.
