Swakopmund-The 14th edition of the African Championships in women and men's Artistic Gymnastics came to an end on Sunday at the Dome in Swakopmund. Throughout the competition, the Namibian team's performance left much to be desired. The African gymnastics community entrusted Namibia to organise and host the continental championships, which saw Cameroon, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, South Africa and hosts Namibia participating at Swakopmund's multi functional sports complex, the Dome. The much-coveted event was contested among Africa's best junior and senior gymnasts in both team and individual competitions. The championships took place under the auspices of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) as well as the African Union of Gymnastics (UAG), and also served as the official African qualification tournament for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Argentina later this year. Namibian gymnasts did, however, not do well at the event and only won one gold medal through Emil Pitt in the vault finals, while Egypt won as per the team results. GFN spokesperson, Britt Adonis said that Namibia is proud to have hosted the championships as it shows that Namibia can organise a world class event of this nature at any point in time. “We are very proud to yet again host a event like this at a world class venue. We as a team did not do to well, but we will get there as we have plenty of potential in our country, just hard work lies ahead” Adonis said. South Africa and Egypt walked away with the most medals at the championships in both the women's and men's divisions.
