Windhoek-Chief Administrator of the National Sports Commission Freddie Mwiya has hailed last weekend's Namibia National Youth Games as a step in the right direction for Sports Development. Youngsters from all 14 regions of the country gathered in Windhoek over three days this past weekend, competing in both the able-bodied and para-athletic categories of Basketball, Boxing, Football, Netball, Volleyball, Swimming, Tennis and Judo. At the event, national teams were selected to represent Namibia at the under 20 Zone Six Games in Gaborone, Botswana in December this year. Despite encountering several challenges and a limited budget, NSC's Freddie Mwiya believes the local organising committee pulled off a successful competition. Mwiya singled out transport as one of the challenges, as two regions had to rely on private transport at last minute, something which was beyond their mandate. The organising committee secured funds to remedy the situation and everybody managed to arrive before or during the opening ceremony. “I'm a very proud chief administrator, a very proud Namibian, but with challenges, but for us we don't look at the challenges, we look about the progress that we have done so far, yes there might be few aspects that we need to do some small improvements” Mwiya said. Mwiya also said that sourcing funds early is crucial for sports development and the hosting of events. He explained that the committee had to rely on very few companies' support, while there are many more operating in various parts of the country. Mwiya also warned slacking sport codes to pull up their socks in the interest of the youth and sports development. The participants, overall, were happy with the event and their performances.
