NRU president Mensah determined to leave lasting legacy

Newly elected president of the Namibian Rugby Union, Corrie Mensah, wants to help Namibia's world ranking and serve the code of Rugby to the best of his ability. Mensah was elected as the new president during an annual general meeting on Satuday, 7th April where he was contesting with former NRU president Bradley Basson and Ivan Gaya, who both eventually withdrew. Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Nbc sport desk, Mensah said he is excited, but it's clearly not an easy seat to occupy. "In an amateur environment like ours, the financial challenges will be the toughest of them all. You should be well equiped to fill this most important position and I believe with 40 years of experience as a Rugby administrator, may just have the required expertise" he said. Mesah previously served on the NRU board in the 2014/15 committee. "I will, however, also rely on the abilities and corporation of the rest of this board. I'm not ready to make any policy announcement as I still have to acquaint myself with the current governance structures at the NRU and the newly established company that will manage the commercial side of things" he explained. For Namibia to qualify for the 2019 World Cup, which will be Namibia's 6th consecutive appearance, seems to be the toughest challenge in 2018 according to Mensah. "While our opposition in Africa has made great strides within Rugby, we remain confident that we will be not only victorious throughout the campaign, but we shall remain champions in 2018" said Mensah. Mensah's term of office is two years, but with the constitution to be amended soon in accordance with the Nationals Sport Commissions' terms and that of World Rugby, the term is likely to change to four years. The rest of the NRU executive committee consists of Gaya (vice president: rugby), Etienne Coetzee (vice president: governance), Johan Ockhuizen (Hardap region), James Camm (Khomas region), Edwin Coetzee (Auas), David van Kradenburg (South), Chandler Plato (West), Jacky Husselman (Namibia Referees Society), Abie van Wyk (Namibia School Sport Rugby), Werner Jeffrey (Tisan) and Corne Powell (Namibia Rugby players’ union). The position in the Northern regions is still vacant.
