Special Olympics Africa recently rewarded Deon Namiseb for his dedication in sport with a recognition award. Namiseb, has - for many years - shown tremendous courage and inspiration to many athletes, especially those with intellectual disabilities. The 39-year-old, who joined Special Olympics in 1992 through a special school as a football player, has since moved up the ranks. Namiseb, who served on the board as the athletes representative, was surprised by the award, which was handed to him by the newly appointed chairperson of Special Olympics Namibia Cliff Olivier. “When it all started, it was a struggle, but I didn't want to give up , because my belief always is that you can do it a thousand times better. That’s my motto, that will put me forward in life. What I want to say to the athletes out there is: It’s not easy to go forward but if you just believe in yourself and in what you are doing you will achieve...” Namiseb said. In 2010, Namiseb was selected as an ambassador for Special Olympics International - a position which saw him traveling to many international events to deliver motivational speeches. He also had an opportunity to shake hands with two former US presidents, namely Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. “He has been a figure of hope in his community and the sporting world, reminding us to believe in ourselves and never give up”, said board chairperson Olivier. He is determined to serve the organisation until he reaches retirement
