Steenkamp and Doman win 18th Omaruru Spar Cycle Challenge

Omaruru-Veteran cyclist Fanie Steenkamp and Mitchelle Doman won the 18th Omaruru Spar Cycle Challenge, which took place under perfect conditions at the town on Saturday. As usual, it was the main race over 100 kilometres (km) that started first, with some of the big names in local cycling in action. The race, which took place on the Omaruru-Kalkfeld road, saw the participants weighing well, especially the pack leaders when going for the half way mark. First in the men's bunch to turn back half way through was Drikus Coetzee, who was actually tipped as a favourite to walk away with the bragging rights on the day, but on his way back his bicycle chain broke down, which cost him dearly. Making his presence felt in the front pack was veteran cyclist Fanie Steenkamp who in the end used his experience to out-race the youngsters on his way to claim the first spot in an unexpected fashion. Mitchelle Doman had an easy race throughout and this led to her victory at the end. "I prepared well and i knows the area very well but when i see that im in with a chance i never looked back, so i put more efforts and he i am as the winner" said Steenkamp. "The race went pretty well. I had an easy break but two of the pack leaders made me work hard,” and i also rested rested my his legs with only 10km to go, and then sped off when there were only a few metres left to the finish line" Doman said. Both the organiser and event sponsor's representatives spoke highly about what transpired on the day and how the event always benefits the small town of Omaruru in many ways. "We had over 250 participants and they put up a good running. I think all went well, the event is growing and this will go for years to come" race organiser Bethold Karumendu said. "Having 250 participants mean we pumped a hefty more then 100-thousand in to the town's economy as this people bought food, pay for accomodation and put the town on the map by participating in the cycling event" Bobby Griebel the owner of Omaruru Spar said.
