Take Rugby Development to all 14 regions

Windhoek-The Chief Executive Officer of Namibia Rugby Limited, Mervin Green, wants to see more rugby development happening in the country. Mervin Green, who oversees the financial arm of Namibian Rugby shared his views on development in the sports on NBC's Absolute Rugby recently. The formerly professional South African rugby player said he was shocked by the findings of the Namibian Sports Commission during its regional visits. The commission found that Rugby is not an essential part of sports in seven of the 14 regions of the country. “It's absolutely unacceptable and I’m throwing this out to the nation by telling the nation, How can you expect people to support you if you are not? If you don’t provide them the opportunity to be part of the game, does not matter at what level they are playing the game, but provide them the opportunity to be part of it” he said. Green said it's not acceptable to only market the game in Khomas region and coastal areas and if there were attempts in the past he said they were probably not good enough. “We need to grow the game outside the traditional hubs where Rugby is traditionally being played in Namibia. This is one thing that I’m really serious. and I’m going to drive from the company side as well to support the Union in getting the game out to the people up in the north where there is huge potential, everybody is telling me the story how many people up in the north people that are really hungry for the game and we just don’t get there so that will be the key focus that the union needs to drive in terms of growing the game and marketing the game” Green added. Contacted for comment, the Chief Administrator of the Namibia Sports Commission, Freddy Mwiya, confirmed the findings and explained that regions which were previously developed also lack behind. He said that this is not only the case with Rugby but happens in other codes as well. Mwiya stated that from the 57 codes registered with the commission some regions only have six codes being practised. “I observed that from the finding that Rugby being a popular sport code in this country, but more concentration is given to the central region. If you go in the outskirts you hardly find the existence of this code. I remember going to the Kunene region, I got a very good report here whereby you only got very few sports codes existing out of the 57 sports codes. You go in Omusati region which is a very big region, the existence of Rugby is also not there. You go to Kavango West , you go to Kavango East it’s only one school. You go to Zambezi region when you move around you ask yourself why this big sport code not in those big regions” Mwiya said. Rugby is the only sport code in the country, which has been to five consecutive World Cups and with the introduction of the new Rugby arm things can only change for the better.
