Xoagub re-elected as NNOC President

The long-serving sports administrator, Abner Xoagub, has been re-elected to head the Namibia National Olympic Committee for the next four years. Representatives from various sport codes affiliated to the Namibia National Olympic Committee casted their votes and decided who would run the affairs of the committee for the next four years during the elective congress held in Windhoek yesterday. Nine members from the previous 12-member committee have been re-elected, with Talita Jario and Andrew Masongo being the newcomers. Abner Xoagub, who has already served on the board for the past 15 years, became president last December after former president Agnes Tjongarero was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Sport , Youth and National Service. Xoagub has also been affirmed as the president of the Commonwealth Games Association. "It means that for the next four years I have to serve the sporting community of Namibia, not only Namibia , Southern Africa, Africa and the rest of the world. It is a challenge which I’m prepared to take on and the first issue we need to address as a nation is to look at what we are putting into Sport." Xoagub said. He added that he was hopeful that in the next five years sport will prominently feature on the national development plan, as previous plans did not cater for sports. Xoagub will be deputised by Advocate Jesse Schickerling, while Joan Smit remains as Secretary General and Monica Bohm as treasurer. The rest of the members are Dawie August, Johan Kruger , Marja Woortman , Talita Jario and Andrew Masongo. "We are elected into the positions to serve the people. The federation must tell us what to do, the Sports Commission must tell us what to do, the ministry must tell us what to. We have connections and network with the international federation and international sporting community. We get to international platforms where we can engage over 205 countries to work with us to participate in events with us and at the same time provide technical assistance." Axogub explained. Gaby Ahrens remains the athlete’s representative. The new committee will co-opt for one more member to make up the 12-member committee after Harald Fuelle indicated that he will not be able to stand
