TB infection in Tsumkwe concerning

High rates of tuberculosis infection continue to be a huge concern in Tsumkwe Constituency in the Otjozondjupa Region.

Otjozondjupa Regional Health Director Gerbardo Timotheus shared his concern during a meeting with Otjozondjupa Governor James Uarikua.
 
The health director with the United Nations Centres for Disease Control and Prevention is on a week-long visit in the region to assess programmes supported by CDC Namibia.

Tsumkwe opens new NaTIS center

The Roads Authority continues to break new ground and bring services closer to the people. 

So far, it has opened  two new NaTIS centers, the latest being at Tsumkwe.


The development pace at Tsumkwe is visibly picking up, and the opening of a NaTIS center here is one that the community has been waiting for. 

For far too long, the community traveled over 300 kilometers for vehicle registration and driver and learner license testing at Grootfontein.

In Tsumkwe, the youth community continued their demonstration this morning, expressing their dissatisfaction with the supplementary list of candidates for this year's National Population and Housing Census. The group's chairperson, Simson Kapembe, revealed that the list was meant to undergo verification involving the councillor's office and two youth representatives.

Tsumkwe Youth strive for government involvement in mass employment

Young people from Tsumkwe, in the Otjozondjupa Region, are steadfast in their quest to be included in mass employment by the government and its agencies. They vow to boycott and disrupt the upcoming Population and Housing Census process. On Tuesday, the youth took to the streets to vent their frustrations over the matter.

Police Arrest Three for Cannabis Possession

Police in the Otjozondjupa Region have arrested two men, aged 44 and 39, in the Omatako area, Tsumkwe West, as they were going to deliver another consignment of cannabis.

The drugs found on the suspects consist of 24 parcels of cannabis valued at N$123,000.

Another suspect was arrested at Kandu, Tsumkwe West, after she was found in possession of 20 parcels of cannabis valued at N$180,000 on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old woman was arrested after a tip-off.

All suspects will appear in the Grootfontein Magistrate's Court today.

Namibia ranks among top 10 countries with high TB cases in the world

Namibia is among the top ten countries with high tuberculosis cases in the World.

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr. Kalumbi Shangula calls on community members with TB symptoms to get tested and start receiving treatment without delay.

Dr. Shangula was speaking at the commemoration of World TB Day in Tsumkwe under the theme Yes! We can end TB!

Namibia recorded 8,604 cases of TB last year, an increase of 30% compared to 2021.

Dr. Shangula says it is devastating that TB cases are high while the disease is preventable and treatable.

TB a major challenge in Tsumkwe

Tuberculosis (TB) infection remains a major health challenge in Tsumkwe.

The health facilities in the area continue to record a higher number of new infections, with the Drug Resistant TB strain being the highest compared to elsewhere in the country.  


To resolve the situation, the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) has deployed groups of health workers who move from village to village to create awareness about TB. 

The healthcare workers also collect sputum samples from community members who are coughing, for diagnosis.

MICT rolls out pilot Digital Computer Literacy Program

The digital divide between urban and rural communities is getting narrower as the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology ensures that the young reap the benefits of the digital world.

To motivate this, the ministry will roll out a pilot Digital Computer Literacy Program to five regions following its launch in Tsumkwe.

The program is aimed at increasing digital computer literacy in rural areas.

It is one step towards achieving a 100% digital literacy rate in the country by 2030.
