The acting Chief Executive Officer of CENORED, Gawie Awaseb, has assured the residents of Okahandja that the power supply will not be disconnected.

This follows NamPower's announcement of the electricity disconnection of all its defaulting clients.

Awaseb clarified that CENORED does not owe NamPower money, but the joint venture company, CENORED Okahandja JV, and Okahandja Municipality.

CENORED owed NamPower over N$60 million in 2017, which Awaseb says has since been reduced to N$2 million.

Namibia was last year more reliant than ever on electricity imports.

According to the IPPR Quarterly Economic Report, overall imports accounted for 71.2% of the total electricity supply, making Namibia acutely vulnerable to developments in the rest of the region.

The report noted that Namibia has long been a net importer of electricity from the Southern African Power Pool and has struggled over decades to build new domestic generating capacity and become more independent.

Residents of the Kavango West Region are now satisfied with NORED's response in addressing the constant power outages in the region.

The town's residents raised concerns about continuous power cuts at a stakeholders' meeting at Nkurenkuru last week.

They said the frequent power outages are affecting their daily activities at businesses, schools and hospitals.

At the previous meeting, the residents called on NamPower to introduce a second supply line to the Kavango West and a dedicated kilovolt line for Nkurenkuru.
