Livestock vaccination against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) commenced on Monday in the Kabbe South Constituency of the Zambezi region.

This follows recent confirmation of FMD at Kalala Island in the same contiguity.

The ||Kharas Police Commander, Marius Katamila, has commended the region's farming community for their cooperation and adherence to Foot-and-Mouth Disease animal movement restrictions.

The restrictions were imposed following an outbreak of FMD at a farm in Karasburg district.

The livestock section at the Windhoek Industrial and Agricultural Show, which just opened its doors, has left areas that would normally be occupied by cattle and other animals largely empty.

Restrictions imposed following the detection of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in the Karasburg Veterinary District have been partially lifted, allowing certain livestock slaughter activities and the movement and trade of specified processed animal products across Namibia.

The country is confronted with Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) after being an FMD-free zone for nearly 60 years. 

Concentrated in the Karasburg farming district, the outbreak was detected at a farm in the area earlier this week. 

Following a recent outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in the Karasburg Veterinary District of the ||Kharas Region, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, through the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS), has released Veterinary Public Notification No. 16 of 2026.
