NFCPT partners with SMEs to boost fish distribution

The Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) has embarked on an innovative strategy to enhance fish distribution across the country. 

The trust has signed contracts with 13 small and medium enterprises to facilitate the distribution of fish to consumers at affordable prices.

The 13 SMEs, selected from a pool of trained entrepreneurs, are part of a 6-month Distribution Agency Pilot Project. 

This project marks a shift in the trust's approach, aiming to collaborate with stakeholders in the fish distribution sector rather than competing with them.

Karibib Municipality prioritise food security

The Chairperson of the Karibib Municipal Council, Lazarus Kanelombe, has emphasised that food security is a crucial legacy of the independence that Namibians battled to achieve. 

He highlighted ongoing initiatives within the township aimed at combating food insecurity, alongside efforts to reduce poverty and unemployment. Notably, the council has spearheaded the creation of a community garden project designed to support over 60 vulnerable, unemployed women, who are expected to benefit from this initiative soon.

FAO supports Namibia's food security efforts with N$2.2 million donation

The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) remains a dedicated partner for Namibia to ensure food security for all.

This commitment was reaffirmed at the handover of gardening tools and irrigation systems to 308 beneficiaries in the Ohangwena Region, valued at N$2.2 million.

FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture are the implementers of the project funded by the government of Japan.

N$25 million will cover four focal regions, namely Ohagwena, ||Kharas, Kavango West, and Zambwezi, to tackle climate-induced shocks.

Hippo rollers boost food security

About 80% of the beneficiaries who received hippo water rollers in Otjiwarongo's informal settlement last year have started backyard gardens.

Besides just the benefits of no longer having to carry water containers on their heads, the Ombili residents, who benefited from the donation of hippo water rollers in March last year, have started their own gardens.

This, they say, is due to the fact that fetching water is no longer a challenge as they can roll their 25-litre containers back and forth.

Gobabis Municipality commits land

The Gobabis Municipality has committed to providing 250 hectares of town land for agriculture to address food insecurity. This came after various non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders promised to assist the malnutrition-stricken region with sustainable food production projects through the office of the Omaheke Governor.

Minister ||Hoebes urges farmers to improve farming methods

The Minister in the Presidency, Christine ||Hoebes, is urging farmers at Tsjaka and surrounding villages to change their methods of farming to increase food security.

||Hoebes remarked this at the official opening of the Tsjaka Agricultural and Industrial Show 2023 in the Kalahari Constituency.||Hoebes emphasised that it is time that farming communities move away from keeping large herds of livestock and add additional components to their farming practices.

She urged stakeholders to assist farmers in this regard. 

Namibia to fulfil its domestic food needs by 2023

Namibia will have the ability to fully meet its local food consumption demand by 2030.

The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, said this when she received a donation of N$2,2 million from the government of Brazil.The funds will complement the government's efforts to end hunger by 2030 through livelihood projects.

The fund, which is administered through the World Food Programme, aims to upscale the implementation of five 'Food System Projects' across the country.

Chinese Ambassador stressed that China is not here to colonise Africa

China's Ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping, urged Namibians not to believe the notion that China is pursuing neo-colonialism on the continent, as most African countries have a mutually beneficial relationship with the Asian powerhouse.

Ambassador Weiping made these remarks during a media briefing at the Chinese embassy in Windhoek.

Farmers in Hardap commended for their role in food security

Small and Medium scale farmers in the Hardap Region were commended by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources, for playing a role in food security in the country.

The parliamentary oversight committee visited the Hardap Green Scheme Irrigation Project at Mariental and also engaged stakeholders in the agriculture sector.

The Hardap region is home to the second biggest dam in the country, ideal for irrigation projects. 

Stakeholders in Agriculture urged to provide incentives to farming

The Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform has called on stakeholders in the industry to be content with the disruptions brought by geo-political tension in the supply of basic foodstuffs.

Carl Schlettwein was speaking at the Inter-sectoral coordination and technical exchange workshop on food security and agronomic support.
