Likwaterera Early Childhood Development Centre inaugurated

The Minister of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare, Doreen Sioka, officially inaugurated the Likwaterera Early Childhood Development Centre in the Kavango East Region.

Since 2016, learners at the centre used to attend classes in thatched houses until these were destroyed by a hailstorm last year.

The Likwaterera Early Childhood Development Centre caters to children from marginalised backgrounds.

Much needs to be done to uplift marginalised communities

Even though the Namibian government is doing its best to uplift the standards of living for marginalised communities, much still needs to be done to reach levels of satisfaction.

The Minister of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare has called on the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to expedite the passing of the Cybercrime Bill to protect children while online.

Doreen Sioka made the remarks at the commemoration of the Day of the African Child at Rosh Pinah in the ||Kharas Region.

According to UNICEF's 2020 report, 9% of Namibia's population between the ages of 12 and 17 has experienced online sexual abuse and exploitation.

Laws, policies, and cultural practices that discriminate against women must be revisited.

This was said by the Executive Director at the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare, Martha Mbombo, at a workshop on strategic planning and the work of the Women's Parliamentary Caucus held in Windhoek.

The three-day workshop is aimed at capacitating female MPs to advocate for and promote women's issues in Parliament.

Agriculture: Namibia's most important sector- Andre

Erongo Governor Neville Andre says agriculture is one of Namibia’s most important sectors, with around 70% of the country’s population depending directly or indirectly on agriculture for their income and livelihood, mostly in the subsistence sector.

Andre highlighted this during the handing over ceremony of 1037 gardening tools, wheelchairs, and swinging machines to SMEs at Swakopmund.

Stateless mother struggles to make ends meet

A stateless mother of 10 at Rundu is finding the going tough as she waits on the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare to approve the children's social grants.

Katarina Matjayi, who resides in the Ndama Informal Settlement, narrated her struggles to nbc News.

Matjayi's struggles started after she gave birth at the age of 16.

By the age of 37, Matjayi had seven children already.

And the arrival of triplets three years ago increased the number of her offspring to ten.

Flood victim Sondag |Hobexab is finally buried at the Epako Cemetery. Sondag died in December after being swept away by heavy rains while sleeping under a bridge in the capital.

The mood at the funeral service was somber as Sondag's mother, siblings and mourners paid their final respects.

Sondag has been living on the streets of Windhoek for the past 13 years after dropping out of school, to eke out a living. 

The delay was due to the festive season break when most government offices were closed.

Youth get training in poultry farming in Rundu

The Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare in the Kavango East Region have added poultry farming to its community income-generating activities' support.

At least 23 beneficiaries, the majority of them youth, underwent poultry farming skills training at Rundu to introduce them to chicken farming.

The regional head of the ministry, Benedikta Kamunoko, says income-generating projects are aimed at empowering rural communities to be food secure and self-reliant.
