Hardap Veld Fires Contained

The raging veld fires in the Hardap Region that destroyed large tracts of grazing land have finally been contained.

The fire started on resettlement farm Haribes and spread to other farms over the course of five days.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Hardap Governor Salomon April confirmed the devastating veld fires were put out around 19 hours on Wednesday.

He said the rain has also brought much respite in the battle against the fire.

Hardap Farmers Battle Raging Veld Fires

Farmers in the Hardap Region have been battling a veld fire that broke out at the Haribes resettlement farm on Monday.

Both Hardap Governor Salomon April and Hardap Region Council Chairperson Gershon Dausab were at the scene of the fire to help put it out.

The Rehoboth Farmers Association and firefighters from the nearby local authorities, as well as the police, were also assisting.

Members of the Namibian Defense Force were also enlisted to help extinguish the fire.

A veld fire is also raging in the ||Kharas Mountain area.

Otjohorongo residents put team up against veld fire

Residents of Otjohorongo in the Erongo Region teamed up to put out veld fires that have been burning for the past six days.

The veld fires have spread over 15 kilometers destroying anything in its path.

Residents are still battling the fires on their own, and strong winds are aggravating the situation.

About 40 households have been affected, and are in need of animal fodder.

Farmers in the ||Kharas Region are counting their losses after a devastating veld fire ravaged the ||Kharas mountains, destroying vast tracts of grazing land and killing livestock.

The Grunau settlement control officer, Simasiku Muteko, confirmed that the fire had been extinguished last night.

He said the much-welcomed rain in the area brought the fire to a smouldering halt.

Although farmers are still counting losses, they estimate that about 60-thousand hectares of grazing land, covering about ten farms, have been destroyed.

The devastating veld fires in the ||Kharas mountain area are still raging out of control.

On Friday afternoon, farmers, with the assistance of the community, were still battling the inferno that started on Tuesday night.

The fires have so far killed several animals and destroyed an estimated 60-thousand hectares of grazing land, covering about ten farms.

Affected farmers battling the fire told the nbc News crew that with divine intervention they are hopeful of putting out the blaze.
