Protesters shift focus from societal to employment related matters

Namibians, particularly the youth have been embracing activism through public protests, against issues such as Gender-Based Violence.

Affected families and community members would protest at courts demanding that perpetrators not be granted bail.

But some activists have now shifted their protests towards employment-related matters including calls for equality, and social change.  
The action of using vigorous campaigning or causing disruptions is to bring about political or social change, at the national or community level.

Certain actions by the police constitute policy brutality- Kudumo

Public Policy Analyst, Dr. Marius Kudumo is of the view that certain actions by the police constitute police brutality.

Dr. Kudumo was particularly referring to police actions during demonstrations.

Kudumo's comments come in the wake of the arrest of two police officers for the alleged murder of a 31-year-old Keetmanshoop resident, who died after an alleged assault by the police.

Stand-offs between the police and civilians are not too common, but should there be an encounter, it is one that is aggressive.

Namibian academics are excelling internationally despite opinions of naysayers- Dr Kudumo

The Director of Corporate Engagement and International Relations at UNAM, Dr. Marius Kudumo, says Namibian academics are excelling internationally despite the opinions of naysayers.

Dr. Kudumo says what the education sector needs to thrive is support from stakeholders.

"There are professors in France who are alumni of UNAM; in the UK, there are people at Oxford; people at the African Union; there are people in the US; people teaching at Pretoria University, so the notion that the Namibian Education System is not of quality is not evidence-based." 

One point six million Namibians continue to live in poverty

One point six million Namibians continue to live in poverty, with the youth mostly affected and plagued by multiple socio-economic challenges.

These were some of the issues being discussed at the Ecumenical Youth Indaba, held in the capital.

The Youth unemployment rate considered a time bomb currently stands at about 50 percent.

The Ecumenical Youth Indaba thus creates a platform for the youth to organise and mobilise themselves to address challenges faced and exploit opportunities presented.
