MP calls for development at Gam Settlement and surrounding areas

A member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources, Mike Venaani, is of the opinion that much still needs to be done to develop Gam settlement and its surrounding areas.

Venaani remarked on this after a visit to the area.

Venaani acknowledged the government's efforts in developing Gam but said the provision of potable water and human-wildlife conflict remain daily challenges.

He wants parliamentarians to intensively discuss the development of places like Gam and others around the country, which he said lag behind in terms of development.

Repatriation of former Batswana on ice

Plans to repatriate 201 Namibian descendents from Botswana to Gam Settlement in the Otjozondjupa Region have hit a snag.

Otjozondjupa Governor James Uerikua confirmed that the initial plan to repatriate the community by the end of this year is stalled due to logistical challenges.

Uerikua points to transportation challenges, including the suggested travel dates for moving the people, their furniture, and their livestock of about 18,000.

Distribution of drought relief assistance set to begin

Drought relief assistance and livestock support programmes for thousands of vulnerable and affected communities and farmers in the Otjozondjupa Region will be distributed from the beginning of October until June 2024.

This was announced by the Otjozondjupa Regional Governor, James Uerikua, who says the council will monitor closely to ensure there is no wastage of food aid or communities not able to access the aid.

At the Gam Settlement, about 100 kilometres from Tsumkwe, community members flocked in large numbers to register for food and livestock assistance.

Governor's Music Bash at Gam a Huge Success

For the first time in a long time, the youth of Gam filled the Gam Combined School hall while some peered from the windows to witness and enjoy a music bash.

It was the final event for the Gam Christmas Extravaganza, courtesy of Otjozondjupa Governor James Uerikua.

Get-togethers such as these hardly happen in Gam, as there are no recreational areas nor performances from top Oviritje artists.

Gam Residents Celebrate Christmas with Horse Racing

Gam residents spent Christmas Day with Otjozondjupa Governor James Ureikua at a horse racing event.

Though the sun was extremely hot, residents parked their cars in reverse to sit and enjoy the horse race.

The horse riders did not disappoint and made sure that they put on a show worth a Christmas Day celebration.

Those in attendance said they were happy to be spending Christmas witnessing a horse racing show.

Otjozondjupa Governor James Uerikua put aside his official title and mingled with the crowd of children and the elders of the Gam settlement.
