Namibia's Independence Day celebrations are nothing without a military parade by the country's arms of service.

Independence Day celebrations are incomplete without a military parade, and it is one of the highlights of the event as members, clad in different military attire, captivate the audience as they march past.

The spokesperson in the Ministry of Defense and Veterans Affairs, Colonel Petrus Shilumbu, explained the significance of a March Past.

"The March" is a procession of lined-up soldiers marching past an important person. On a reviewing standard as part of a ceremonial Dr. Hage Geingob."

He added that Independence Day was an opportune time for the country's defense forces to display their prowess proudly.

33 years after the country's independence, women are comfortable taking their place in the defense forces, with many now occupying higher positions than has been the case since independence.

This year's parade was extra special as it was commanded by a woman, the Commander of the Karibib Air Force Base, Group Captain Ester Philemon, and also by two female officers who escorted the President as he inspected the parade.
