Namibia has terminated the shared BONA2027 bid with Botswana.

In a letter addressed to her counterpart from Botswana, Tumiso Rakgare, the Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero, informed him that Namibia is unable to fulfill its obligations in terms of the MoU between the two governments.

The letter states that with the looming drought in Namibia, government was forced to reprioritise its resources and will not be able to honour the N$4.8 billion required to upgrade facilities.

Namibia and Botswana have undertaken to jointly bid as hosts of the 2027 Afcon, a bid which the two countries said that apart from hosting Afcon was also seen as bolstering the host countries' arts and entertainment industries, among others.

The hosting would have also created jobs and boosted the economic boom of the two countries.
