Erongo Governor Neville Andre has emphasised the need for African countries to strive for economic independence.

Andre said this during the Africa Day commemoration with senior citizens at Walvis Bay.

Africa Day is an occasion to commemorate and honour the achievements of the Organisation of African Unity, now known as the African Union, since its establishment in 1963.

It symbolises the continent's struggle against colonialism and apartheid, as well as the progress made by Africa while recognising the shared challenges faced in a global context, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, unresolved conflicts, and a severe food crisis.

Andre highlighted Africa as a beacon of hope, celebrating its immense promise and potential as a diverse and vibrant continent.

He also emphasised the importance of African countries working together to harness the continent's abundant resources and develop cutting-edge technologies that will be in high demand worldwide.

Andre underscored the significance of unity among African nations, stating that it will make the continent resilient and impervious to external influences from Western countries.

He urged Africans not to relent in their efforts to improve their livelihoods and to continue working diligently towards progress.

This year's Africa Month is celebrated with the theme "Acceleration of the AfCFTA Implementation."
