The Commissioner of the African Commission on Human and People's Rights (ACHPR), Janet Sallah-Njie, described her mission to Namibia as a success.

She attributed this to the fact that Namibia has agreed to fix the challenges in the development of human and people's rights.

Sallah-Njie was on a mission in Namibia to promote the African Charter on Human and People's Rights as well as other regional and international human rights instruments.

"Namibia being in the 8th position in the Global Gender Gap Report of 2022, as the highest ranked African country for closing the gap between women and men in economic opportunity, this is really commendable."

The delegation, however, noted some challenges that Namibia needs to address in the promotion and protection of human and people's rights.

These include a lack of awareness of human and people's rights in rural areas, outdated colonial laws, access to land, traditional harmful practises, and the issuance of national identity documents by marginalised communities.

Other recommendations are for the government to increase the budget allocation to health and education as well as the establishment of an independent body to investigate allegations of violations by law enforcement officers.
