The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) has observed a lack of adherence and respect towards the observance of correct protocols and etiquette, particularly in the singing of the national anthem and hoisting of the national flag.

The ministry has now launched a campaign on the National Symbols under the Nationhood and National Pride Programme to educate the nation on the symbols, protocols, and etiquette.

National symbols worldwide are powerful representations of countries' identities, values, and aspirations.

For Namibia, national symbols represent its heritage, its history, and its triumphs through years of heroic struggle for independence, nationhood, and a sense of belonging.

These are the national flag, the national anthem, the coat of arms, and those that represent the ideals of freedom, unity, and equality.

For example, it is expected of an officer to assume a certain etiquette during the singing of the national anthem and the hosting of the national flag.

The public is expected to observe the national anthem etiquette too. The media received a whip for disregarding the protocols.

To enhance public education efforts for the National Symbols campaign, the Ministry, in collaboration with stakeholders, has produced several information, education, and communication materials in various formats for airing in print and electronic media.

The materials will be translated into local languages for easy access and comprehension. The campaign will be rolled out to all 14 regions.
