Ondangwa Town Council has set aside N$2.4 million for the construction of 31 Build Together Houses at the Onatsi-Proper informal settlement.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the project took place at Ondangwa.

The houses, which will be completed in two months, are for low-income earners.

Beneficiaries are expected to pay N$105 per month to enable the council to continue availing land to those who are on the waiting list.

The payment will end as soon as beneficiaries are issued title deeds.

Ondangwa Town Council has entered into an agreement with local building suppliers to buy materials in bulk from them.

The beneficiaries' responsibility is to get their own builders, who will be working under close supervision with the council to monitor the progress and quality of the structures.

"We work every day at the town council, and when I say we work, it is not only the staff of the council that does this work; it is the entire community of Ondangwa, and hence the programme that we are about to launch this morning that is called Build Together. The name itself is telling us that we need to come together and build houses together," said Ismael Namgongo, Ondangwa CEO.

47 beneficiaries were allocated plots for free to build houses on their own at their preferred time, and at the ceremony, they were issued land allocation letters.

They are expected to build their houses at Onatsi Proper, a new location that was established recently.

Onatsi Proper has clean drinking water, roads, and electricity, while the sewerage system will be provided at a later stage.

There are 10,000 people on the waiting list in informal and formal areas.
