The 2024 elections may still be a while off, but political and other interested parties are already changing gears in preparation.

The Former Plan Combatants Association (FPCA) is among those that have already begun strategising to ensure that the Swapo Party attains a two-thirds majority in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

The association held a workshop aimed at designing an effective campaign strategy and improving coordination across its regional and district structures.

"Besides the issue of coordination and networking at the regional level, we will look at issues of possible political campaigns; at the end of the day, we look at having a well-crafted campaign strategy that will serve as a road map for all of us during the forthcoming election campaign", said FPCA chairperson Sinsy Nghipandua.

Another agenda item is setting the organisation's goals straight.

"When this association was formed, some people were saying former plant combatants were confused and didn't know what they were doing, but I just want to assure anyone who is interested in this association that FPCA means business, and that is what brought us here. We are determined, and we know we have capable commissars who can do the job.'

Some of the resolutions taken at the workshop are to intensify mobilisation, retain all members who defected, and restore the party's sense of integrity.

Established in 2022, the Former Plan Combatants Association has a membership base of about 2,000.

The association targets an eventual membership count of 5,000.

It has two representatives in the Swapo Party Central Committee and one in the Political Bureau.
