The Zambezi vocational training centre and the Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (NORED) have signed a five-year memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation in technical and vocational training.
The two institutions will collaborate in trainee industrial attachment, internship, apprenticeship, and staff exchange programmes for capacity building, as well as staff exposure, renovations, repair works for building structures and conducting research.
"This collaboration will not only enhance the training and development of these individuals but also increase their employability prospects, ultimately contributing to the socio-economic growth of the country in general and to the individual graduate."
On his part, NORED's Chief Executive Officer, Fillemon Nakashole, advised the consideration of vocational training for those still planning their future careers.
"VTC graduates, particularly electricians, are essential to our core operation and always have 100% chances to get employment by NORED and other utilities; hence, the negative perception and attitude towards participating in technical vocational and training programmes and the social stigmatisation of the VTC graduate in favour of a white collar job should be denounced and rejected at all times."
Speaking at the occasion, Zambezi Governor Lawrence Sampofu applauded the initiative, saying it would not only serve the two institutions but also benefit the community at large.
"Vocational education is very important because we need skills to build our industries, and our industries cannot function without electricity, so you can see the importance of vocational education and education."
Sampofu appealed to the two signatories to abide by the MoU in order to deliver services to the communities.
