The Namibia National Teachers Union (NANTU) has inaugurated its regional office, valued at N$6.2 million, at Nkurenkuru in the Kavango West Region.
The office was funded through the N$100 monthly contribution of NANTU members in the region.
"As a new addition to our fixed assets as a union of professionals, we have been demonstrating prudential behaviour and accountability in dealing with our members' money. Our being here today is a clear demonstration of good ethics and a fulfilment of our fiduciary responsibility as the governing council of this union. Comrade leadership, dear members, we are officially accounting to our members today, particularly members from Kavango West, on the utilisation of their money during our tenure," said Loide Shaanika, NANTU Secretary General.
The office was constructed within six months, employing 25 workers.
The Acting President of NANTU, Daniel Humbu, says this is a great achievement for the Union as the office was completed despite financial difficulties.
"We strive to construct all these offices and acquire land by making use of internal resources. Not from somewhere outside. The Regional Chairperson just said the office was built through the hundred dollars that members are paying; we did not get any funds from anywhere. Despite the economic circumstances, it is a great pleasure for the entire NANTU leadership to observe the completion of our office today, which has a unique look. I would therefore like to ask for understanding and support from all our members in the Kavango West to make use of this office."
The office has extensive facilities for conferences and seminars, including four offices and a boardroom.
Humbu called on NANTU members to make the office live up to its full potential by taking care of the facility.
The Regional Chairperson of NANTU Kavango West Region, Philipus Sepuka, expressed gratitude on behalf of the members.
"It is my distinguished honour and privilege to extend my sincere appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to the entire leadership of NANTU for having supported and approved the project to have a permanent structure for the region. The region has been operating in the storeroom since its birth in the year 2014 up to date, and thus marks a decade in a period of ten years."
Sekupe assured the leadership that the building would be taken care of.
