The Meat Corporation of Namibia (MeatCo) has spent N$1.1 million on setting up livestock auction pens at Eiseb 10 Growth Point in the Otjombinde Constituency of the Omaheke Region.
Usually, farmers would make use of the Gobabis auction pens, which are 350 kilometres away.
Speaking at the official handover of the auction pens at Eiseb 10, MeatCo Board Member Usiel Kandjii emphasised that the corporation has the mandate to develop basic marketing infrastructure within communal areas to allow producers to become part of the value chain.
"We are very excited and honoured to officially hand over this facility in the hope that it will be utilised optimally by the Eiseb community. We urge that it will benefit the entire community, and it's well maintained and upgraded to better serve your needs."
Omaheke Governor Pijoo Nganate commended MeatCo for stepping in. "My profound thanks and appreciation to the councillor and Eiseb youth for having persistently and without being tired fought for these kraals. This beautiful gift is lifesaving. This investment will go a long way in our journey towards self-realisation in being known as the region that feeds itself and provides surplus to its neighbours."
Otjombinde Councillor Wenzel Kavaka described the auction pens as a milestone, while Ombara of the Ovambanderu Traditional Authority Eben Nguvauva called upon his community to guard against vandalism.
The auction pen still needs to be properly fenced off and furnished with sitting stands.
