Residents in Mukwe and Ndiyona constituencies of the Kavango East Region are the latest to join the call for a revision of compensation paid to victims of human-wildlife conflict, as they engaged with members of the parliamentary standing committee on natural resources.
During the meeting, community members emphasised that they do not comprehend how the ministry arrived at the compensation amount, and they contend that their losses far exceed the payments they receive.
Residents proposed that the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism review the compensation policy.
They also recommended that the ministry relocate the parks to a distance of at least 50 kilometres from the community and ensure that staff members promptly respond to their requests.
The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Recourses, Tjekero Tweya, stated that the findings will be presented in parliament for discussion, and the ultimate outcomes will be communicated.
