Some community members in Gobabis have objected to the decision by the council to allocate Farm Nuwe Hoop to be used for various projects aimed at improving the livelihoods of the inhabitants.

The group claims that the council did not follow the right procedures.

The group further demands that the envisaged project should be registered as a legal entity and that a detailed cost breakdown and startup capital must be shared with the community.

"From the above, it is evident that the application from the governor falls short in every aspect of the project; therefore, revert back to the governor and the mayor doing justice to the project that they claim will be beneficial to the community of Gobabis. We have a responsibility to hold our leaders accountable while we are sitting, and it was therefore very disturbing. It is for this reason that we called on the governor and mayor to follow proper procedures as prescribed in the local authority act for the acquisition of farm Nuwehoop. We call upon them to follow correct, even any other land to be allocated," says group spokesperson Veronia Makaleng.

The community is also against the alleged 25-year lease agreement for the 250 hectares of land.

When approached for comment, Chairperson of the Management Committee Sylvester Binga informed nbc News team that first the council will study the petition and provide factual updates on the matter at hand.

Binga added that the council will always ensure that all decisions taken are in the best interest of the residents.
