A Zambian national, aged 25, died at the scene of a vehicle accident in the Zambezi Region on Thursday afternoon after the bus he was a passenger in overturned.

Ten other occupants of the minibus are currently fighting for their lives in Lusaka Military Hospital after being rushed to the Katima Mulilo on Thursday. Zambian and Namibian immigration officials are still establishing the identities of the injured persons. The minibus with a Zambian registration was travelling from Windhoek, where the Zambian squash team had participated in a squash competition between teams from Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, and Zambia.

The teams were on their way back to Lusaka, Zambia. It is alleged that the rear tyre of the Toyota Combi burst, causing the driver to lose control and resulting in the vehicle rolling over three times. All the passengers were thrown out of the minibus. Most of the passengers sustained multiple, serious injuries.

A case of culpable homicide, alternatively reckless and/or negligent driving, is being investigated by the police.

All victims, including the deceased, were initially transported to Katima Mulilo State Hospital, from where they have since been airlifted to Zambia by the Zambian Air Force. They are all admitted to the Mina Soko Medical Centre at Lusaka Military Hospital.

Five of the injured are in serious condition, while the other five are reported to be stable.
