The Ministry of Environment's Anti-Poaching Unit has apprehended four men in the early hours of today near Lusu Village in Sibbinda Constituency, Zambezi Region, for illegal possession of wildlife products.

The four men, all Namibians, were found in possession of two carcasses of wildebeests and one of a buffalo.

The unit also confiscated three hunting rifles that were found in their possession and impounded their vehicle.

It is reported that the animals were poached in the Lake Lyambezi basin.

A 38-year-old Namibian man was apprehended by Nshimwe security guards at Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region while he was digging for copper cables.

The suspect was handed over to the police, who charged him with theft.

Two other suspects managed to escape arrest.

The NORED Regional Manager for Operations in the Zambezi Region, Sylvester Chaka, who was at the scene, told nbc News that they carried out investigations after realising that the town centre was without power.

Hundreds of hippos are stranded and trapped in the mud waters along the Chobe and Linyanti rivers in the Zambezi Region.

The river received low rainfall this year compared to previous years.

Most parts of the Chobe and Linyanti rivers bordering Botswana and Namibia's Zambezi Region have started drying up due to insufficient rainfall.

In previous years, the Chobe River got inflows of flood water; this year, the situation is different. 

The body of a villager from Nongozi was retrieved from a swamp in the Nkasa-Rupara National Park in the Zambezi Region on Tuesday. 

The 29-year-old  Samupwa Lubinda's body was already in a state of early decomposition when it was retrieved. 

According to a police report, Lubinda drowned during a fishing excursion with two other men in the park on Sunday.

It is alleged that when they were busy removing fish from the nets, they saw anti-poaching officials and jumped into the water.

Since January of this year, residents of Brendan Kangongolo Simbwaye Village in Malindi, Zambezi Region, have faced challenges in accessing potable water. 

The difficulties began following the collapse of a 10,000-litre water tank that served the community.

Residents claim that they do not have water for daily use and are appealing to the government to come to their aid.

Bernard Simbwaye, a resident of the village, says children have been going to school without bathing as they try to use water sparingly.

Some residents of Mafuta compound, east of Choto, in Katima Mulilo Rural have been affected by low water pressure.

However, NamWater officials and technicians are addressing the matter.
Water to the Mafuta compound is supplied via a NamWater reservoir, but according to residents, consistent low water pressure is a major headache. 

Richards Kangumu, a member of the Village Development Committee in the area, said the matter had been worsened by an increase in population in the area.

190 people at Malengalenga in Linyanti district joined the Swapo Party from other political parties.

The members were received by Swapo Party Secretary General Sofia Shaningwa on Saturday late afternoon at Malengalenga. 

Most of the members came from the Independence Patriots for Change (IPC), while others supported an independent candidate during the last elections. 

The returning members said they were back home to the party of their forefathers, fathers, mothers, and brothers.

The government has allocated N$8 million to revive the Kalimbeza National Rice Project and has also approved that a sugar plantation be established on part of Kalimbeza, as well as a sugar processing plant in Katima Mulilo.

President Nangolo Mbumba revealed this during his address at the national independence celebration at Katima Mulilo.

The two projects to be rolled out soon are among the few projects earmarked to bring much-needed development and jobs to the Zambezi Region.

Zambezi Governor Alufea Sampofu says Namibia, as a young nation of 34 years, needs to uphold unity and work towards economic development and progress.

Sampofu called upon the youth to use education as a tool to shape a brighter future for today's generation and those to come, and to pledge to positively contribute to the country's economic development and growth.

After gaining independence in 1975, Angola authorised PLAN to use its southern territory to launch and fight the war in Namibia in 1976. 

President Nangolo Mbumba says true independence is fundamental to the success and credibility of any nation, as it is the only way people can obtain their dignity and full humanity.

Dr. Mbumba was speaking at the 34th Independence Day celebrations at Katima Mulilo today, where thousands of people from the region and visitors gathered to witness the first national independence celebration in the region.

The event was festive as residents gathered to witness performances of the Namibia Defence Force (NDF), which is mostly liked by everyone.
