The gold mining company B2Gold says it is ready to fully cooperate with an investigation into a fatal road crash on the Otjiwarongo-Otavi road this morning.

The crash, involving two heavy cargo trucks, led to the death of two people, while it also caused the spillage of hazardous chemical poison, cyanide.

The road crash involving the truck carrying cyanide and another truck happened about 10 kilometres north of Otjiwarongo on the road to Otavi.

The cargo, transported by an accredited cyanide transporter, Coleman Logistics, was on its way to the B2Gold Otjikoto mine.

Two people died as a result of the crash, while another one was seriously injured in the head-on collision.

The injured truck driver is currently receiving medical care.

The incident brought traffic on the road to a complete standstill, but traffic resumed a few hours following the construction of a one-way detour, using a stop-and-go method, regulated by traffic officials.

The Police and Roads Authority officials as well as B2Gold's Emergency Response Team were immediately dispatched to the scene and took control of it.

It is not clear what caused the accident.

B2Gold says it is working closely with relevant authorities to assess any environmental or public health risks, saying the safety of the communities in which it operates, employees and contractors remains a priority.

The company has promised further updates as more information becomes available.

Roads Authority Spokesperson Hileni Filemon has confirmed that the road has been reopened for traffic.

She, however, urged road users to proceed carefully as they approach the crash scene.

Filemon says it was determined that the chemical poison, which was transported in containers, did not spill on the road, and as a result, the road could be opened soon.

She says the Roads Authority will assess the damage to that stretch of the road as soon as it is able to do so and will decide on the way forward.

Cyanide is primarily used in mining, particularly in the extraction of gold and silver through a process called cyanidation.

This involves using a cyanide solution, usually sodium cyanide, to dissolve gold from its ore.
