The 17-year-old suspect at the centre of the gruesome murder of six family members in Usakos has allegedly confessed to the killings, according to police sources familiar with the investigation.

Sources told nbc News that the teenager claimed the violence erupted following an argument with his grandmother, who allegedly refused to give him money and reminded him that she would no longer support him after he had dropped out of school.

Under the influence of drugs at the time, the suspect allegedly became enraged and attacked his grandmother.

According to the confession, the commotion woke four young children, whose cries the teenager allegedly attempted to silence by stabbing them one by one.

Upon returning from a dance event later that night, the suspect’s twin sister encountered him at the entrance of the home. An alleged struggle followed, during which she was also fatally stabbed.

According to the alleged confession, the suspect then laid the bodies side by side, covered them with a mattress, and set them on fire.

He is further said to have told police that a voice had instructed him to kill his family.

Sources say that one child who was not part of the household had been staying over that night. The suspect allegedly returned the child to their mother’s home and, when asked why, told the woman to check on his family, stating that the house was on fire.

nbc News reached out to the Erongo Regional Commander of NamPol, Commissioner Nikolaus Kupembona, who said the suspect is a minor, and the police cannot at this time confirm if a confession has been given.

The suspect, who is currently in police custody, turns 18 on Friday.

The six deceased family members will be buried next weekend at Usakos.

 Investigations continue.
