A group of Ovaherero community members, under the leadership of Dr. Hoze Riruako, converged at the historical site Ozombuzovindimba in the Omaheke Region for the 119th annual commemoration. Ozombuzovindimba is a historical place for the Ovaherero community, as many died there during the 1904 genocide through an extermination order.
Speaking at Ozombuzovindimba's 119th annual commemoration, Dr. Hoze Riruako says an order resulted in not only the deaths of many but also robbed the community of its wealth.
"I managed to unveil the first ever governing and administrative structure of this great nation, and similarly, I managed to unveil the financial structure to make sure that from here onwards, the Ovaherero and Ovambanderu who find themselves under OTA are able to utilise their resources in the most optimal and prudent manner."
A representative of the Heritage Council of Namibia, Helena Nangolo, touched on the significance of the Ozombuzovindimba heritage site and assured that the Council will assist with the development of the site.
"In accordance with the mandates, the National Heritage Council embarks upon the development of the management plan. This plan will serve as a guidance rule offering directives on how to manage, protect, and enhance visitors experiences at historical sites."
PDM's president, McHenry Venaani, also attended the commemoration.
"I'm happy that we preserve what belongs to us despite challenges. I'm thankful that our days of commemoration have remained with us. Let's go ahead and keep the history. Having differences will never end, but let's keep telling the history, especially to the younger generation."
The commemoration of Ozombuzovindimba was held under the theme "What we envisage for our future".
