The Kanaan Informal Settlement upgrading team is pleading with the Gobabis municipality to assist them with funds for land surveyors, as the community is finding it difficult to raise the expected amount while the deadline of October 31 set by surveyors is fast approaching.
The team has so far collected N$380,000 of the N$900,000 charged by the surveyors to demarcate the land. The group spokesperson, Jacob Tjinae, told nbc News that the aim is to bring much-needed services to residents through proper land allocations and registration.
The team has registered 4,600 plots as part of the upgrading project.
"We need to contribute N$210 per household, which is going to give us a total of N$900,000, which will pay the land surveyor. So far, that is the fight we are having. So far, we are at 380 in the account, and to start with this, we are in short, and we request our municipality to assist us in this regard."
The Gobabis Municipality's Public Relations Officer, Frederick Ueitele, assured the Kanaan residents that despite the shortfall, the surveyor would demarcate the land, peg it, and relocate it as agreed with the community.
Ueitele added that after surveying the land, stakeholders and the community will embark on planning for the process of servicing the land, with water being the first priority.
