The new hydrogen project at Dâures Green Hydrogen Village plans to become the largest food producer in Namibia.
Its Chief Executive Officer, Jerome Namaseb, says the project will set up a one-hectare greenhouse facility that will produce 500 to 600 tonnes of agricultural produce throughout the year.
The Dâures Green Hydrogen Village is based in the Dâures, a constituency of approximately 11,000 inhabitants.
The project has the ambition to produce 31 metric tonnes of hydrogen and 109 metric tonnes of ammonia per year during the first phase.
It will further produce 500 metric tonnes of tomatoes and 600 metric tonnes of carrots.
This greenhouse, Namaseb says, will be climate-controlled to ensure that agricultural products will be grown all year to ensure food security.
"So we are looking forward to contributing to food security as well as aiding in import substitution to ensure that Namibia is really being fed by agriculture and products being produced and agriculturally grown within Namibia."
He said they have already engaged various distributors to make sure that they have a market once harvest time arrives.
"In phase one, we are looking at dedicating 50% of the facility to easily grow crops, for example, tomatoes, while in the remaining parts of the facility, we are going to conduct various activities and experiments to determine what the most suitable crops are to be grown in this facility with the type of environment and setting that we have."
The project is expected to create more than 70 sustainable jobs in the first phase and over 100 temporary jobs during the construction phase.
