The Namibian Police is intensifying their efforts and operations to ensure road safety and reduce road trauma.

NamPol has recorded a decrease in road crashes and injuries during 2023 compared to last year.

From the 1st of January 2023 until November 12, 2023, about 2,553, 4,508 injuries, and 357 fatalities were recorded countrywide.

Following the launch of a countrywide festive season operation, the |Khomas Region commenced its road safety festive season campaign, which will see an increase in law enforcement visibility on national roads and promote compliance with legal frameworks on the B1 and B2 roads.

During the period 2021–2022, there has been a reduction in fatalities, crashes, and serious injuries compared to the period 2022–2023.

Road crashes were reduced by 14.4%, injuries by 17.5%, and fatalities by 42.2%.

From January 1st, 2023, to November, a decrease of 4% in crashes was observed, with 2,658 cases.

Injuries also decreased, with 1% recording 4,471 cases, whereas fatalities increased by 9% to 392 cases.

However, the high statistics remain a cause for concern.

"Our aim during this campaign should also be directed towards curbing incidents of drunk driving, speeding, reckless driving, and negligent driving and ensuring that drivers and their vehicles are fit to be on our national roads. It takes a lot of planning, commitment, and determination to make this campaign a success."

Stakeholders, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and the road safety fraternity, are urged to collectively play their part in raising road safety awareness and reducing road carnage.

This is especially done by ensuring that their vehicles are roadworthy and abide by all road rules.
