Vice President Nangolo Mbumba is actively calling on both the public and private sectors to open up employment avenues for 2,989 graduates from the National Youth Service (NYS).
This appeal was emphasised in a statement delivered by the Minister of Sport, Youth, and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero, on his behalf at the pass-out parade of the 14th intake of National Service Training in Henties Bay.
Mbumba says the government recognises the plight of the youth and the many challenges they face, such as a lack of skills and high unemployment.
The government has prioritised addressing these challenges through various institutions.
A total of 3550 youth completed the National Youth Service training. Of these, 561 secured employment, while 2989 remain unemployed.
During the 2022–23 financial year, NDF recruited 50 graduates, while NamPol recruited 245.
Graduates are urged to follow in the footsteps of previous graduates, who put the skills they acquired to use.
"NYS is one of the government's crucial entities in this regard, as it is tasked with the mandate to, amongst others, provide the youth with opportunities for further studies and training to enhance their employment opportunities by contributing to the socio-economic development and alleviation of poverty.
This supports the government's key developmental policies, such as the National Development Plan 5, Vision 2030, Harambee Prosperity Plan II, and the National Youth Policy."
The programme aims to instill a sense of value and respect in the participants while further promoting volunteerism.
The recruits had this to say.
The youth are actively deployed to participate in projects of national importance, contributing towards the socio-economic development of Namibia.
