Murder convict Dippenaar's sentencing postponed

The Swakopmund Regional Court has postponed the sentencing of Jandre Dippenaar to August 20. 

Dippenaar was convicted of six counts of murder over a fatal accident that happened in December 2014 near Henties Bay.

Dippenaar was further convicted on Thursday on charges of reckless and/or negligent driving and driving without a valid licence.

When he appeared for sentencing on Tuesday, the convict's lawyer, Petrie Theron, submitted an application for the court not to proceed with sentencing.

Locals and tourists urged to keep coastline clean

The founder of the coastal conservation clean-up campaign, Rudie van Vuuren, is calling on locals and tourists alike to keep the Namibian beachfront clean after visiting the coastal towns.

He made this call during the clean-up campaign held along the beach between Henties Bay, Swakopmund, and Walvis Bay.

The central coast bulges with holidaymakers every festive season, during and after which a lot of trash is left behind.

This is especially the case along the stretch of coastline between Henties Bay, Swakopmund, and Walvis Bay.

Henties Bay residents have bemoaned poverty levels, a lack of recreational facilities, and low wages in the town.

As people flock to different towns in search of a better life, the woes of poverty and unemployment continue to have a grip on the population.

In Henties Bay, the sight of shanty homes paints a picture of desperation for those in search of greener pastures, while the youth struggle to stay out of trouble due to a lack of recreational facilities.

Public and private sectors urged to provide employment to youth

Vice President Nangolo Mbumba is actively calling on both the public and private sectors to open up employment avenues for 2,989 graduates from the National Youth Service (NYS).

This appeal was emphasised in a statement delivered by the Minister of Sport, Youth, and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero, on his behalf at the pass-out parade of the 14th intake of National Service Training in Henties Bay.

Mbumba says the government recognises the plight of the youth and the many challenges they face, such as a lack of skills and high unemployment.
